For most Arab students applying to a university abroad in 2026, the real choice between the Duolingo English Test and IELTS comes down to three things: the shape of the exam, the skills each one rewards, and where each result is accepted. The DET is one adaptive hour of fifteen short question types with computer-delivered Speaking and Writing. IELTS is a fixed three-part paper plus a live Speaking interview. They are not the same exam in two lengths — they measure differently.
On acceptance, IELTS wins one decisive point: it is an approved Secure English Language Test for UK visas, and the DET is not, and IELTS is required outright for the Australian subclass 500 student visa.
So the honest answer is not “DET is better”. It is: check your route first, then choose the test your route allows and your strengths suit. If your universities accept the DET and your visa route lets a university assess your English on the CAS, the DET is the more direct path. If any part of your route needs a SELT, you take IELTS — or you take both.
This guide compares the two on format, difficulty and acceptance, with the specifics that matter for students in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan and Morocco.
- DET format≈ 1 hour, adaptive, 15 question types + Writing and Speaking samples
- IELTS format≈ 2 h 45 min, 4 fixed sections + a live Speaking interview
- DET scoring10-160 in 5-point steps, 4 subscores + 4 skill scores
- IELTS scoringBands 0-9 overall, with a band for each of the four skills
- AcceptanceDET: 6,000+ institutions. IELTS: near universal, plus SELT status
- Validity2 years for both tests
Format: the two exams are shaped differently
The structural differences drive almost everything else, so start here.
| Duolingo English Test | IELTS Academic | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | One adaptive session: difficulty rises and falls with your answers | Four fixed sections, identical for everyone in the room |
| Length | ≈ 1 hour (≈45 min adaptive + 10-15 min Writing and Speaking samples) | ≈ 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Task size | 15 short question types, most 20 seconds to 5 minutes | Long tasks: 60 minutes for Reading alone |
| Speaking | Recorded responses to a screen, inside the same hour | Live interview with an examiner, sometimes on a separate day |
| Writing | Writing Sample and Interactive Writing, plus short productive tasks | Task 1 (150-word data description) + Task 2 (250-word essay) |
| Reported result | 10-160 overall, plus Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production | Band 0-9 overall, plus a band for each skill |
The adaptive design is the piece students most often misunderstand. Because the DET adjusts as you answer, a run of hard items late in a section usually means you are doing well — and abandoning a question costs you more than a calm, complete attempt. IELTS has no such feedback loop: every candidate sees the same paper, and pacing is a matter of stamina rather than of reading the machine.
Difficulty: they are hard in different ways
Neither test is “easier”. They stress different abilities, and Arabic speakers tend to find the difficulty sits in different places.
| Dimension | DET | IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 15 short question types, adaptive – questions get harder as you do well | 4 fixed sections, same for everyone |
| Pace | Very fast; most tasks are 20 seconds to 5 minutes | Slower, longer texts and tasks; 60 minutes for Reading alone |
| Reading load | Short passages, vocabulary and gap-filling | Three long academic passages, 40 questions |
| Writing | Two extended tasks (Writing Sample, Interactive Writing) plus short ones | Task 1 (150 words, data description) + Task 2 (250-word essay) |
| Speaking | Recorded monologues to a screen – no interviewer, no follow-up help | Live examiner, who can rephrase and prompt you |
| What it punishes | Slow typing, weak spelling, hesitation, panicking under a timer | Weak academic vocabulary, long-text stamina, essay structure |
For Arabic speakers specifically: the DET’s Read and Complete and Listen and Type tasks punish the vowel-and-double-letter spelling problems that Arabic script habits create, and the recorded Speaking gives you no interviewer to rescue you. On the other hand, IELTS Writing Task 1 (describing a graph) is a genre most Arab students have never written in any language, and the 60-minute Reading section defeats people whose English is fine but whose reading speed is not.
Our short answer after teaching both: if your English is around B1-B2 and your problem is exam nerves and pacing, the DET is friendlier. If your English is strong but your typing and spelling are weak, IELTS may suit you better. Full breakdown in DET vs IELTS vs TOEFL and a task-by-task map in DET question types.
How the two results are read by a university
A UK or Canadian admissions officer does not compare the tests; they compare your numbers with their table. Knowing the mapping tells you what to aim for.
| IELTS requirement | Usual DET equivalent | Typical component minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 5.5 | 95 | 85-90 in each |
| 6.0 | 105 | 95-100 in each |
| 6.5 | 120 | 105-110 in each |
| 7.0 | 130 | 120 in each |
Two things follow from this. First, the DET overall is the average of your four subscores rounded up to the nearest 5, so one weak skill pulls the whole result down in a way an IELTS band profile does not always show. Second, the component minimums are where offers are actually lost: a DET 120 with Writing at 95 fails a requirement that an even 115 would have met. Whichever test you choose, plan against the weakest skill.
Acceptance: where each test is enough
IELTS is accepted essentially everywhere. The DET is accepted by more than 6,000 institutions worldwide and is strong in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia – but “strong” is not “universal”, and the exceptions are concentrated in exactly the places that matter.
Universities. Most mainstream UK, US, Canadian and Australian universities accept the DET for admission. Some do not: Nottingham Trent and the University of East London say so explicitly, and Birmingham, Manchester, Greenwich and Coventry do not list it among approved tests. Always verify on the university’s own English language page rather than on a blog list.
Visas – this is where the DET stops.
| Route | DET | IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| UK Student visa, degree level, compliant university | Usually fine – the university assesses you and confirms it on your CAS | Also fine |
| UK below degree level or pre-sessional with combined CAS | Normally not enough – a SELT is required | IELTS for UKVI required |
| Canada study permit (SDS closed Nov 2024) | Regular stream; your institution’s Letter of Acceptance carries the English evidence | Also accepted |
| Australia subclass 500 student visa | Not accepted | Accepted |
| US F-1 | The university decides; the DET is widely accepted | Also accepted |
| Professional registration and licensing bodies | Rarely accepted | Usually the required test |
The DET is not on the UK Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests. The approved SELT providers are Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT, Pearson and, outside the UK, PSI Services UK. That does not block a normal degree application, because Home Office guidance lets a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance assess English itself and state the method on the CAS – but it does block foundation-level and pre-sessional routes.
Choosing your target score for your universities
Once you know which test your route allows, the next decision is the number — and it comes from the admissions page, not from an average.
| Where you are applying | DET to aim for | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation and pathway routes | 95-105 | An even profile across the four subscores |
| Mainstream undergraduate | 110-120 | Literacy and Comprehension comfortable |
| Taught master’s programmes | 120-130 | Production under time pressure |
| Competitive and selective programmes | 130+ | Conversation and Production both strong |
Aim about five points above the published minimum, because DET scores move in 5-point steps and the score on the day is rarely identical to your practice average. And read the component line before anything else: it catches more Arab applicants than the overall figure does.
Which one should you book?
| Your situation | Book |
|---|---|
| UK, US or Canadian university, degree level, and it accepts the DET | DET |
| Australian student visa (subclass 500) | IELTS |
| UK foundation year, or a pre-sessional on a combined CAS | IELTS for UKVI |
| Your university is not on any DET list and does not reply | IELTS (safe default) |
| You are strong in speaking but slow at typing and spelling | IELTS |
| You type fluently and work well under a short timer | DET |
| Professional registration, or immigration other than study | IELTS |
Whichever you choose, the preparation problem is the same: a target score, a deadline, and a small number of fixable weaknesses. That is what our courses do – a steady-paced standard round, an intensive course when the test is imminent, and 1-on-1 when you want the whole thing built around your schedule. Everything is taught live in English, with Arabic-language support for Arabic speakers who want it, and your Speaking and Writing corrected personally by a teacher.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Duolingo English Test easier than IELTS?
It is shorter and faster, not simpler. It is adaptive, so it gets harder as you answer well, and it punishes slow typing and weak spelling more than IELTS does.
What is the biggest format difference?
Speaking. The DET records your answers to a screen with no interviewer, while IELTS puts you in a live interview where the examiner can rephrase a question and prompt you.
Can I use the Duolingo English Test for a UK Student visa?
Indirectly. The DET is not an approved SELT, but at degree level a compliant university can assess your English and confirm it on your CAS. For a foundation year or a pre-sessional on a combined CAS you will need IELTS for UKVI.
Is the DET accepted in Canada and Australia?
By many universities for admission, yes – but it is not accepted for the Australian subclass 500 student visa, and in Canada the regular study permit stream applies since SDS closed in November 2024. Check your visa route before you book.
How long are the scores valid?
Two years for both the Duolingo English Test and IELTS.
What DET score equals IELTS 6.5?
120 overall at almost every university that publishes a conversion, usually with 105-110 in each component.
How many times can I take the DET?
Up to three certified tests in any 30-day period, which leaves room for a re-sit before most deadlines.
Which test do Arabic speakers usually score better on?
In our classes, students with B1-B2 English and exam nerves usually do better on the DET; students with strong English but weak typing and spelling often prefer IELTS.
