A free touch-typing trainer to help you type faster in English, built for students preparing for the Duolingo English Test and anyone who writes on a computer. It has 22 step-by-step lessons with a colour-coded keyboard and hands, smart practice that adapts to your weakest keys, a speed test, and a DET writing sprint.
No sign-up: your progress is saved on your device.
How it works
- Lessons: start on the home row (A S D F and J K L and the ; key) and add two keys at a time. The on-screen keyboard and hands light up the finger to use for every key. Each lesson unlocks the next when your accuracy is high enough.
- Smart practice: like the best adaptive trainers, it measures the speed and accuracy of each key, gives you more practice on your weakest keys inside real English words, and adds a new letter only when you are ready.
- Speed test: 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes with common words, DET-style sentences, or capitals, punctuation and numbers. You get words per minute, accuracy and the keys you missed most.
- DET writing sprint: answer a real-style prompt in 1 or 5 minutes and see how many words you produce.
Can I learn to type in one day?
In one day (about two hours with breaks) you can learn where every key is and which finger presses it, using the one-day plan in the trainer. Speed comes after that: 15–20 minutes of practice a day for a few weeks is what turns slow, correct typing into fast typing. Accuracy first, speed second.
Why typing speed matters for the Duolingo English Test
The Duolingo English Test has timed writing tasks that you type on your computer. If you type faster, you spend less of the time hunting for keys and more of it thinking, organising your ideas and checking grammar and spelling.
Questions
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type around 30–40 words per minute without training. With touch typing and regular practice, 50–70 words per minute is a realistic goal, and some people go much higher.
Should I look at the keyboard?
Try not to. Look at the coloured keyboard on the screen instead, so your fingers learn the positions by feel.
Does it work on a phone?
Touch typing is learned on a physical keyboard, so use a laptop or desktop for the lessons. The speed test also works on phones.
