Where Ethiopian students apply — and the scores they are asked for

Ethiopian applications skew heavily towards graduate study, which raises the scores that matter.

• United States. The largest destination by far, and the easiest ground for the DET: the great majority of well-known US universities accept it for undergraduate admission and most graduate programmes accept it too. Master’s and PhD admissions commonly want 120–130; undergraduate entry often sits at 95–110.
• Canada. Increasingly popular for Ethiopian postgraduates. The University of Toronto requires an overall 120 with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024 — the Production subscore is a separate condition, not an average. Elsewhere in Canada, 110–125 is the usual band.
• Germany. A major destination for Ethiopian engineers and scientists thanks to low or no tuition. A growing number of English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes accept the DET, typically 105–120 — but acceptance is decided course by course, so read the specific programme page and not just the university’s general admissions text.
• United Kingdom. Imperial College London, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool and York are among the accepting universities, usually asking 110–125. See our UK DET score requirements guide.
• Ireland. Most Irish universities accept the DET, and Ireland is a practical English-taught route inside the EU.

Ethiopian universities teach in English and do not normally ask domestic applicants for an English test, so the DET here is an outbound document. Because Ethiopian applicants often apply to many universities at once to maximise funding chances, the DET’s unlimited score reports make applying widely straightforward.

Visa rules: where a DET score is enough and where it is not

Admission and immigration are decided separately, and the DET does not carry the same weight in both.

United Kingdom. The DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study — which covers most Ethiopian applicants — gov.uk allows your Higher Education Provider to assess your English itself at CEFR B2 and confirm that assessment on your CAS, and universities accepting the DET do exactly this. For a course below degree level, the Home Office requires a SELT at B1 from an approved provider, and no DET score will do. Confirm your course level before you choose an exam.

Canada. The Student Direct Stream was discontinued in November 2024. All applicants now use the regular study permit, where the designated learning institution decides what English evidence it accepts. If your DLI accepts the DET, submit the score with your letter of acceptance and the institution’s published policy.

Australia. The DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa, regardless of what the university says. If Australia is your plan, budget for a test from the Department of Home Affairs’ list.

United States, Germany, Ireland. No separate government English test is imposed on top of admission. For the US, your F-1 interview at the embassy in Addis Ababa is itself conducted in English, so genuine spoken fluency is worth more than a number that flatters you.

DET or IELTS for a student in Ethiopia

Once acceptance is settled, the choice comes down to format and to what each exam is valid for.

For an Ethiopian student outside Addis there is a second practical difference: sitting IELTS usually means travelling to the capital and building the whole application timeline around a sitting date, while the DET is taken on your own schedule. Our complete DET guide covers the scoring in detail.

Choosing your target score for the universities Ethiopian students apply to

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too, which is where unprepared candidates are caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 95 fails a requirement that the headline number appears to meet.

Work backwards from the requirements on this page rather than aiming at a round number:

• 95–110 covers most US bachelor entry, and much of the English-taught bachelor and master intake in Germany (105–120).
• 110–125 is the usual band for UK degree-level entry (Imperial, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool, York) and for most Canadian universities.
• 120–130 is what competitive undergraduate and graduate admissions ask for, and Toronto adds a subscore condition — 120 overall with 120 in Production, so a strong total with weak Production still fails.

Ethiopian applications skew towards graduate study, so the 120–130 band is the realistic planning target for most readers here, with a subscore floor to clear as well. Paying by card from Ethiopia

This has historically been the hardest step for Ethiopian students, and it is the part that has changed the most.

Under the foreign exchange reforms that followed the 2024 policy change, banks may now issue internationally recognised cards to all foreign currency account holders and load foreign currency on the account holder’s instruction — without the old requirement to produce a travel visa and an air ticket first. The same directive explicitly allows Ethiopians to pay for digital services and e-commerce from funds held in a foreign exchange account, and permits advance payments for education and medical services of up to USD 20,000 per case on the basis of documentation from the foreign institution, again without travel documents. The minimum balance needed to open an FX account has been removed and left to each bank’s discretion.

In practical terms: if you hold or can open a foreign currency account at your bank, ask for an international Visa or Mastercard against it and an online payment should go through normally. Ordinary birr-denominated cards from Ethiopian banks generally still will not work on international merchants, so do not assume your existing card will pay. Diaspora relatives paying on your behalf remains a common and perfectly acceptable route — the card does not have to be in your name.
