Mexican institutions that accept the Duolingo English Test

Duolingo’s own country page for Mexico names several institutions accepting the test, including:

• Tecnológico de Monterrey (all campuses)
• EGADE Business School, Tec de Monterrey
• Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN)
• Universidad Iberoamericana (international office)

That list is the starting point, not the final word: within any university, the requirement belongs to the programme and to the office handling your case — admisiones, the international office for intercambio, or a graduate school. Write to that office, name the test, and ask for the overall and subscore minimum in writing. Check the official Duolingo accepting-institutions directory at the same time.

Applying abroad: the scores universities publish

Most students in Mexico who take the DET are applying north, or to Europe. Examples with numbers published by the universities themselves:

• Arizona State University — 95 for general undergraduate programmes, 100 for Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Engineering, 120 for the Cronkite school. A realistic benchmark for the big US public universities Mexican students apply to.
• University of Toronto — 120 overall with 120 in Production.
• Trinity College Dublin — 120 overall with 100 in each subscore, rising to 130/110 for higher-band courses.
• IE University (Spain) — minimum 130, useful if you are looking at Spain rather than the US.

The rule that loses students their offers is the subscore rule. Toronto asks for 120 in Production specifically; hitting 120 overall with a weak Production score is a refusal.

The score you actually need

Aim a little above the published minimum. Scores move in 5-point steps, and your score on the day is not your best practice score. Re-sitting is allowed — up to three certified tests in 30 days — but a margin is more reliable than a re-sit.

What the test actually asks you to do

One adaptive exam of about an hour mixes roughly fifteen question types, and the adaptive engine keeps raising the difficulty while you keep answering well. Knowing what each task rewards is most of the preparation:

• Read and Complete and Read and Select — precise grammar, spelling and vocabulary work that builds Literacy; these are method tasks, not guessing games.
• Listen and Type and Read Aloud — short, high-frequency items that move Comprehension and Conversation faster than anything else on the exam.
• Interactive Reading and Interactive Writing — longer sets where pacing decides the outcome: run out of time on the last screen and the whole set suffers.
• Speak About the Photo, Listen Then Speak and Read Then Speak — spoken tasks graded on how long you keep going, how clearly you structure the answer and how varied your language is. Stopping after twenty seconds is the single most common self-inflicted loss.
• Writing Sample and Speaking Sample — the longer pieces that shape your Production subscore and are also sent to the institutions you choose.

Your overall score is reported on the 10–160 scale with four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production — and universities frequently set a floor in each. That is why our classes drill the tasks that move the weakest subscore rather than the ones you already enjoy.

DET, IELTS or TOEFL from Mexico?

Once acceptance is settled, the three exams differ mainly in shape.

Keep IELTS or TOEFL in mind for three cases: an Australian student visa, a UK visa route that needs a SELT, and the university that simply does not list Duolingo. For everything else — US graduate applications, Canadian universities, Irish and most European programmes, and Mexican English-taught programmes — the DET is the more flexible route, and a second attempt does not mean waiting a month for a date.

Visa rules worth knowing first

• United States: the F-1 visa has no English test of its own. Your university’s requirement is what matters, and US consular posts in Mexico are used to seeing DET-based admissions.
• Canada: the SDS stream ended in November 2024; under the regular study permit your designated learning institution decides the English evidence.
• Australia: the DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa, regardless of the university’s academic decision.
• United Kingdom: the DET is not a UKVI SELT; degree-level admission at a university with a track record of compliance normally relies on the university’s own assessment.

Paying by card from Mexico
