Which UK universities accept the Duolingo English Test?

DET acceptance in the UK grew quickly and is now mainstream rather than marginal. Institutions that publish DET requirements on their own admissions pages include the University of York, the University of Sussex, the University of Southampton, the University of Hertfordshire, Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Portsmouth and UCLan. Others — Nottingham Trent, the University of East London, Birmingham, Manchester, Greenwich and Coventry — either state that they do not accept it or leave it off their approved list, so never rely on a third-party “accepted universities” list. The full, authoritative list lives on Duolingo’s own accepting-institutions directory — that is the page to search before you apply, because departments inside the same university sometimes differ.

Many UK departments also set subscore minimums — for example an overall 120 with no subscore below 110. That matters enormously for Arabic speakers, because it is common to score strongly on Literacy and Comprehension while Production or Conversation lags behind. Our course targets those two weakest areas deliberately. If your offer letter does not state subscore minimums, email the admissions office and ask; do not assume.

DET, the CAS and your UK student visa — read this carefully

The Home Office requires that Student route applicants prove English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study. There are two ways to satisfy it:

• A SELT (IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert and a small number of others). The Duolingo English Test is not on this list.
• Sponsor assessment. If you are studying at degree level at a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance, that university may assess your English itself and confirm on your CAS that it has done so. Many UK universities use a DET score as that evidence.

So in practice most Arabic-speaking students applying to a UK bachelor’s or master’s can use DET end to end — but the decision belongs to the university, not to you and not to us. Before you book the test, send your admissions office one message: Do you accept the Duolingo English Test as your English assessment for the CAS, and what overall and subscore minimums apply to my course? Keep the reply. If the answer is no, or if your course is below degree level (a foundation year at a private college, a pre-sessional at a non-track-record provider, English language study), book a SELT and treat DET as a backup only.

Choosing your target score for UK universities

Set the number first; everything else follows from it. In the UK the number has two parts, and students who miss an offer usually miss it on the second one.

Three rules of thumb that save UK applicants a second attempt:

• Aim five points above the published minimum. An offer that says 120 is a floor, not a target, and rounding works in 5-point steps.
• Read the subscore line before you read anything else. A 125 with Production at 100 is refused where a 115 with everything even is accepted.
• Get the requirement in writing. Departments inside one university differ, and a programme page can be out of date; the admissions office reply is what you plan against.

Bring that requirement to your first class and the plan is built backwards from it: if Production is the constraint, the hours go to Write About the Photo, Interactive Writing and the Speaking Sample; if Comprehension is, they go to Listen and Type and Interactive Listening.

Schedule and recordings

Classes are live on Zoom, and every lecture is uploaded the same day as a lesson recording you can review, so you can follow from wherever you are in the world. We send the exact schedule of the next round on WhatsApp. If you are working shifts, the intensive course covers the same material in fewer days with more hours a day, and the private 1-on-1 course lets you pick your own slot.

Booking and payment

The standard course is a full live course on Zoom, with homework correction, personal Speaking and Writing correction and WhatsApp support included; the private course runs on your own schedule. Class times are set per round — message us on WhatsApp for the next round’s details.

Paying from a UK bank is straightforward: we take Visa and Mastercard, and any UK debit or credit card works. If your card is blocked by a fraud filter (common on first international charges), approve the payment in your banking app and try again, or message us on WhatsApp and we will send alternative transfer options. The Duolingo exam itself is booked separately with Duolingo.

Why Arabic-language support is the difference for Arab students in Britain

You already live in English. You order coffee in it, sit in lectures in it, argue with your landlord in it. That is exactly why a generic English class does nothing for your score: it teaches you English, and you do not need English — you need the test.

What actually costs Arabic speakers marks is structural. Speaking answers that run out of content at forty seconds because the idea was formed in Arabic and translated live. Writing that scores mid-range because it reads as a stack of coordinated clauses rather than a developed argument. Articles and prepositions dropped under pressure. Read Aloud sentences rushed because the eye reads Arabic-style for gist. Every one of those is faster to fix when the diagnosis can be delivered in your first language and the fix is drilled in English.

For parents in Egypt or the Gulf paying for a student in the UK
