If you are in India and need an English score for a university abroad, the Duolingo English Test (DET) is one of the most widely accepted options: a computer-adaptive exam scored on the 10–160 scale, valid for two years and accepted at more than 6,000 institutions worldwide.
The catch is that the DET is unforgiving. It adapts to you, fires fifteen question types at you, and scores Speaking and Writing on pacing, grammatical range and task completion — things Indian students are rarely taught to control.

Where Indian students actually use a Duolingo English Test score
For students in India the DET is an outbound test: you take it in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru or a small town, and the score travels to an admissions office abroad. Duolingo reports acceptance at more than 6,000 institutions; these are the published requirements Indian applicants meet most often.
United States
- Arizona State University: 95 for most undergraduate majors, 105 for higher-requirement Fulton Engineering programmes.
- Northeastern University (College of Professional Studies): 105 for graduate and bachelor’s-completion programmes, 120 for doctoral study.
Canada
- University of Toronto: 120 overall with 120 in Production for undergraduate entry (tests from 1 July 2024).
- University of British Columbia: 125 overall, with 115 Reading, 115 Listening, 120 Writing, 120 Speaking.
United Kingdom and Ireland
- Most UK degree courses that take the DET quote a band between 110 and 130, the more selective universities at the top of it. The DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test — see the visa section.
- Trinity College Dublin: 120 with 100 in every subscore for standard entry, 130 with 110 for higher entry.
- University College Dublin: from 90 with 80 in each subscore, rising to 100–110 and above depending on the master’s.
Germany and Australia
- Germany is mixed: private and international institutions are likeliest to accept it — Constructor University (Bremen) lists 110 for graduate entry — while many public universities still ask for IELTS or TOEFL. Check the programme page.
- Some Australian providers accept the DET for admission (UNSW College publishes Duolingo bands across its pathway programmes), but not for the student visa — see below.

Does the Duolingo English Test help inside India?
Indian universities assess English through your board results, the medium of instruction or their own entrance process, so a DET score rarely decides a local admission. It can come up at international branch campuses and dual-degree programmes, which usually mirror the parent university’s policy — ask them directly. Otherwise, treat the DET as your passport to admissions offices outside India.
Visa reality check for Indian applicants
This is where a lot of money gets wasted, so read it before you book anything.
- Canada. The Student Direct Stream was discontinued in November 2024. Under the regular study permit, your designated learning institution decides which English evidence it accepts — and many accept the DET. Confirm with your DLI in writing.
- United Kingdom. The DET is not on the Home Office SELT list, but for degree-level study a licensed higher-education sponsor can assess your English itself and confirm it on your CAS — which is why so many UK universities publish DET bands. Below degree level, you need a SELT such as IELTS UKVI.
- Australia. Home Affairs publishes a fixed list of accepted tests (IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, LanguageCert Academic, CELPIP, Michigan English Test) and does not accept tests delivered completely online. An Australian plan needs a second test for the subclass 500 visa.

Choosing your target score for the universities Indian applicants apply to
The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many also publish a minimum in each subscore, which is where prepared students are caught out: an overall 120 with a Production of 95 fails a Toronto-style requirement even though the headline number looks fine.
Work backwards from the requirements on this page rather than aiming at a round number:
- 90–105 covers a large share of undergraduate entry — Arizona State at 95, Northeastern’s professional-studies programmes at 105, University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore.
- 110–125 is the band most UK degree courses and mainstream Canadian entry sit in, and where European institutions such as Constructor University (110) land.
- 120–130+ is selective and graduate territory: Toronto at 120 with 120 in Production, UBC at 125 with subscore floors, Trinity College Dublin at 120 with 100 in every subscore and 130 with 110 for higher entry.
Pick the highest requirement among the programmes on your list and plan a comfortable margin above it, because subscore floors, not the overall number, are what most often send an application back. DET or IELTS from India? The format comparison
The two exams test the same language but in different shapes, and that difference decides which one suits you — acceptance aside, you should choose on format.

Practical answer: use the DET wherever your universities accept it, and sit IELTS UKVI or another Home Affairs-listed exam only if your visa route demands it. Paying for the course by card from India
You can pay online by Visa or Mastercard from India. Two practical notes:
- Turn on international transactions first. Indian banks ship most cards with international and online (card-not-present) use switched off. Enable international e-commerce in your bank app and set a limit that covers the payment.
- TCS is not an issue at this size. Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, education remittances carry no TCS up to INR 10 lakh in a financial year and 2% above it, and loan-funded remittances are exempt — a payment of this size is far below the threshold. A forex card or an international debit card both work.

Is the course taught in English?
Yes. Classes are taught fully in English by certified instructors who specialise in international English exams, which is also the language you will be tested in. Arabic-language support exists for Arabic-speaking students, but for students in India everything runs in English.

What is actually on the Duolingo English Test?
About fifteen question types across one adaptive exam: reading and completing passages, listening and typing, reading aloud, selecting real English words, an interactive reading set, interactive writing, and longer speaking and writing tasks that shape your Production and Conversation subscores. The exam adapts as you answer, so the questions get harder the better you do.
DET or IELTS for my application from India?
Check acceptance first: if your universities publish a Duolingo band, the DET is usually the simpler exam to prepare for, since it runs about an hour, is computer-adaptive and reports an overall 10–160 score with four subscores. IELTS still matters where a visa route requires a Secure English Language Test, such as below-degree-level study in the UK.
