Where Ghanaian students apply — and the scores that matter

Ghana’s outbound map is dominated by four destinations, with Germany rising fast among engineering and computing applicants.

• United States. The largest single destination for Ghanaian students, and the friendliest territory for the DET: the great majority of well-known US universities accept it for undergraduate entry and most graduate schools do too. Bachelor’s programmes commonly sit at 95–110; competitive and graduate admissions want 120–130.
• Canada. The University of Toronto requires an overall 120 with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024 — note that the subscore condition is separate from the overall score, and a strong total with weak Production still fails. Elsewhere in Canada, 110–125 is the usual band.
• United Kingdom. Imperial College London, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool and York are among the accepting universities, typically in the 110–125 range. Our UK DET score guide goes deeper.
• Ireland. Most Irish universities accept the DET, and Ireland now takes a meaningful share of Ghanaian applicants looking for an English-taught degree in the EU.
• Germany. English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes at a growing list of universities and Fachhochschulen accept the DET, usually 105–120. Acceptance is decided programme by programme, so read the specific course page rather than a general university page.

Inside Ghana, universities teach in English and do not normally ask Ghanaian applicants for an English test, so the DET is almost always an outbound document here. If a programme page is silent on Duolingo, email admissions directly and keep the reply — a written confirmation from the admissions office outranks anything you read in a WhatsApp group.

Visas: what the DET does and does not cover

Being admitted and being granted a visa are two separate approvals, and the DET does not carry equal weight in both.

United Kingdom. The DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study this rarely matters: gov.uk allows your Higher Education Provider to assess your English itself, provided the standard reaches CEFR B2, and the university confirms that assessment on your CAS. If your course is below degree level — many foundation programmes, diplomas and courses at private colleges — the Home Office requires a SELT at B1 from an approved provider, and a DET score cannot be used. Confirm the level of your course before you choose an exam, because this is the mistake that sends Ghanaian students back to sit a second exam weeks later.

Canada. The Student Direct Stream ended in November 2024. Everyone now uses the regular study permit route, on which the designated learning institution — not the visa office — decides what English evidence it accepts. If your DLI accepts the DET, submit the score together with your letter of acceptance and the institution’s published English policy.

Australia. The DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa. An Australian offer based on a DET score will still leave you needing a test from the Department of Home Affairs’ own list.

United States, Ireland, Germany. No separate government English test is layered on top of admission. For the US, remember that your F-1 interview at the embassy in Accra is itself conducted in English — another reason to prepare for real fluency rather than a number.

DET or IELTS for a student in Ghana

Once acceptance is settled, the choice comes down to format and to what each exam is valid for.

For degree-level applications to the US, Canada, Ireland or Germany the DET is usually the more flexible option, and because Ghanaian applicants often apply to several universities at once, unlimited score sending helps. Choosing your target score for the universities Ghanaian students apply to

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too, which is where unprepared candidates are caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 95 fails a requirement that the headline number appears to meet.

Work backwards from the requirements on this page rather than aiming at a round number:

• 95–110 covers most US bachelor programmes, and a large share of English-taught bachelor entry in Germany (105–120).
• 110–125 is the usual band for UK degree-level entry (Imperial, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool, York) and for most Canadian universities.
• 120–130 is what competitive and graduate admissions ask for, and Toronto adds a subscore condition — 120 overall with 120 in Production, so a strong total with weak Production still fails.

Pick the highest requirement on your shortlist and plan a margin above it, because subscore floors rather than the overall number are what most often send an application back. You may sit up to three certified tests in any 30-day window, but a prepared first attempt beats a run of unprepared ones. Paying by card from Ghana

Most Ghanaian banks issue Visa or Mastercard debit cards that work online abroad, but many apply a monthly or per-transaction international spending cap and require the card to be explicitly enabled for foreign transactions. Ghanaian issuers have varied these caps repeatedly as cedi pressure changed, so the sensible move is to open your banking app before you pay and check three things: whether international transactions are switched on, what the current limit is, and whether your card is a domestic-only variant. A card that has never been used abroad is the most common reason a payment fails at the last step.

If your bank card is declined, the usual alternatives are a dollar (FCA) account card, a prepaid dollar card from a licensed provider, or a card belonging to a family member abroad. Mobile money is widely used in Ghana but is not accepted for international card payments of this kind.
