Where Nigerian students apply — and what the DET score has to be

Nigerian applicants cluster around five destinations, and the DET behaves differently in each.

• United States. This is where Nigeria’s numbers are largest, and it is also where the DET is most comfortably established: the overwhelming majority of well-known US universities take it for undergraduate admission, and most graduate schools do too. Competitive programmes usually want 120–130; many bachelor’s programmes sit at 95–110.
• Canada. The University of Toronto publishes a clear requirement: an overall 120 with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024. That subscore condition is the detail Nigerian applicants most often miss — a 125 overall with a weak Production score still fails. Other Canadian universities typically ask 110–125.
• United Kingdom. Imperial College London, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool and York are among the universities that accept the DET for degree-level entry. Typical asks run 110–125 depending on the subject. See our guide to DET scores at UK universities.
• Ireland. Most Irish universities accept the DET, and Ireland has become a serious alternative for Nigerian students looking beyond the UK.
• Germany. English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes at a growing number of German universities and applied-sciences institutions accept the DET, usually in the 105–120 range. German acceptance is the least uniform of the five, so check the programme page itself.

Nigerian universities themselves teach in English and do not normally ask for an English test from Nigerian applicants, so for most readers the DET is purely an outbound document. Where a university’s published page is ambiguous, write to admissions and keep the reply in writing — that email has settled more cases than any forum post.

The visa question: admission is not the same as immigration

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding among Nigerian applicants. A university accepting your DET score does not automatically mean a visa office does.

United Kingdom. The DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test (SELT). For most Nigerian students this is fine: gov.uk states that if you are studying at degree level or above, your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, as long as the standard meets CEFR B2. Your university then confirms this on your CAS, and the DET score is the evidence it assessed. But if your course is below degree level — a foundation year at a private college, a pre-sessional at a non-HEP provider, many diploma routes — the Home Office requires a SELT at B1 from an approved provider, and no DET score will substitute. In that case you will be sitting IELTS for UKVI in Lagos or Abuja regardless.

Canada. The Student Direct Stream was discontinued in November 2024, so everyone now uses the regular study permit route. There is no fixed government test requirement on that route — the designated learning institution decides what English evidence it will accept, and if your DLI accepts the DET, it stands. Keep your admission letter and the university’s English policy together in your application.

Australia. Do not plan around the DET here. It is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa. Even if an Australian university admits you on a DET score, the visa application will need a test from the Department of Home Affairs’ own list.

United States, Ireland, Germany. No separate government English test is imposed on top of admission; the institution’s decision carries the weight. For the US, your F-1 interview at the consulate in Lagos or Abuja is conducted in English, which is its own argument for real spoken fluency rather than score tricks.

DET or IELTS for a student in Nigeria: the honest comparison

Put the two side by side on the things that decide your application.

For a Nigerian student applying to degree-level programmes in the US, Canada, Ireland or Germany, the DET is usually the more flexible choice, and unlimited score sending suits applicants who file to several universities at once. For a below-degree-level UK course or any Australian plan, IELTS remains necessary. Some students sensibly do both: the DET for admissions, IELTS later only if the visa route demands it.

Choosing your target score for the universities Nigerian students apply to

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too, which is where unprepared candidates are caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 95 fails a requirement that the headline number appears to meet.

Work backwards from the requirements on this page rather than aiming at a round number:

• 95–110 covers most US bachelor programmes, and a large share of English-taught bachelor entry in Germany (105–120).
• 110–125 is the usual band for UK degree-level entry (Imperial, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool, York) and for most Canadian universities.
• 120–130 is what competitive and graduate admissions ask for, and Toronto adds a subscore condition — 120 overall with 120 in Production, so a strong total with weak Production still fails.

Pick the highest requirement on your shortlist and plan a comfortable margin above it: subscore floors, not the overall number, are what most often send an application back. You may sit up to three certified tests in any 30-day window, but a prepared first attempt beats a string of unprepared ones. Paying by card from Nigeria

Teachero is paid in dollars, so the question is which card will actually go through.

The naira card situation has improved substantially. After a three-year freeze, Nigerian banks resumed international transactions on naira cards, and limits have been widening as FX liquidity returned: GTBank moved to a quarterly ceiling of $20,000 on POS and online spending from June 2026, while FirstBank has advertised around $500 a month on its naira cards. UBA reactivated international use on its premium naira cards and Wema restored dollar-denominated payments on its naira Mastercard. The old $20 ceiling that made Nigerian cards famously useless abroad is no longer the norm.

Practical advice: check your own bank’s current international limit in the app before you sit down to pay, and enable international transactions if the toggle is off. If your naira card is declined, the reliable fallbacks are a domiciliary account card, a virtual dollar card from a licensed Nigerian fintech, or a card belonging to a relative abroad.
