Universities abroad that publish a DET requirement

More than 6,000 institutions accept the DET, and the destinations Turkish students choose are among the strongest. Published examples:

• University of Toronto (Canada) — 120 overall with 120 in Production for undergraduate admission.
• Arizona State University (USA) — 95 for general undergraduate programmes, 100 Nursing, 105 higher-requirement Engineering, 120 for the Cronkite school.
• Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) — 120 overall with 100 in each subscore, 130 with 110 for higher-band courses.
• IE University (Spain) — minimum 130.
• UK universities — most publish an IELTS requirement and a DET equivalent; the mapping is set out in DET score requirements at UK universities.

Two Turkish-specific habits worth keeping. First, check whether the diploma will be recognised in Türkiye if you plan to return — recognition is decided by YÖK, and it is a separate question from English. Second, if you are applying through a state scholarship or ministry programme, read its own list of accepted exams: funders often name YDS, TOEFL or IELTS specifically, and a DET score will not substitute unless the programme says so.

The score you actually need

Then read the subscore line. Toronto asks for 120 in Production, Trinity for 100 in each component — conditions that a student with a strong overall score can still miss. Aim a little above the published minimum, because scores move in 5-point steps and no one repeats their best practice score exactly.

What the test actually asks you to do

One adaptive exam of about an hour mixes roughly fifteen question types, and the engine keeps raising the difficulty while you keep answering well. Knowing what each task rewards is most of the preparation:

• Read and Complete and Read and Select — precise grammar, spelling and vocabulary work that builds Literacy; these are method tasks, not guessing games.
• Listen and Type and Read Aloud — short, high-frequency items that move Comprehension and Conversation faster than anything else on the exam.
• Interactive Reading and Interactive Writing — longer sets where pacing decides the outcome: run out of time on the last screen and the whole set suffers.
• Speak About the Photo, Listen Then Speak and Read Then Speak — spoken tasks graded on how long you keep going, how clearly you structure the answer and how varied your language is. Stopping after twenty seconds is the most common self-inflicted loss.
• Writing Sample and Speaking Sample — the longer pieces that shape your Production subscore and are also sent to the institutions you choose.

Your overall score is reported on the 10–160 scale with four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production — and universities frequently set a floor in each. That is why our classes drill the tasks that move your weakest subscore rather than the ones you already enjoy.

DET, IELTS, TOEFL or YDS?

Each has its place, and the choice should follow what your university and your visa route publish.

IELTS remains necessary for a UK SELT visa route, for the Australian student visa and for universities that do not list Duolingo; TOEFL iBT is a similar commitment and is widely accepted in the US. For a student who has just received a conditional offer with a deadline weeks away, the DET’s one-hour adaptive format and the option of a further certified attempt within the same 30-day window are what usually decide it.

Visa caveats to check first

• Australia: the DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa, whatever the university says academically.
• Canada: the SDS stream was discontinued in November 2024. On the regular study permit, your designated learning institution decides the English evidence — many accept the DET.
• United Kingdom: the DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test. Degree-level study at a university with a track record of compliance normally relies on the university’s own assessment; a pre-sessional or below-degree course at a private college usually requires a genuine SELT.
• United States: no English test on the F-1 visa itself; the university’s condition is the one to satisfy.

How the course works from Türkiye

Three formats: the standard course (more days, fewer hours a day), the intensive course (fewer days, more hours a day, when the deadline is close), and a private tailored course one-to-one around your level and your schedule.

All of them are live online and taught in English by certified instructors, with lesson recordings you can review afterwards — useful in an exam period or while you are still at school or work. Speaking and Writing are corrected personally, and you sit full mock tests before the real exam. WhatsApp support runs between sessions, and Arabic-language support is available for Arabic-speaking students who need it. Paying by card from Türkiye

The course is paid by card (Visa or Mastercard) from Türkiye, with other options available on WhatsApp. Your Turkish bank converts at its own rate, so check your card’s limit and make sure international and online use is enabled in your bank’s app before you pay — and use a credit card rather than a debit card where possible.
