The Duolingo English Test is accepted by a number of those universities as proof of English — but Turkey is the country where you must check hardest, because acceptance here is genuinely mixed. Some private universities list Duolingo among their accepted exams; others explicitly refuse it. Bahçeşehir University, for example, states plainly that Duolingo results are not acceptable proficiency scores, and Istanbul Medipol’s published list of accepted international exams does not include it either.
So the rule for Turkey is simple: open your university’s English proficiency page, find the accepted-exams table, and look for Duolingo before you do anything else. Where it is accepted, DET is the most direct route available to you — one adaptive hour, scored 10–160 across four subscores — and it can exempt you from a full year of hazirlik (English preparatory school).

Which Turkish universities accept the Duolingo English Test?
Turkish universities run a distinctive system. Each institution publishes a table of accepted English proficiency exams with its own minimum scores, usually alongside its own in-house proficiency exam (the muafiyet or exemption exam). The Turkish national exams YDS, e-YDS and YÖKDİL appear on nearly every list; the international exams vary.
What the published pages show:
- Some private universities do accept DET and appear in Duolingo’s official accepting-institutions directory. This group is where Arab students most often use a DET score, typically for English-medium bachelor’s and master’s programmes.
- Several prominent universities do not. Bahçeşehir University (BAU) states that Duolingo results, along with the online versions of several other exams, are not acceptable proficiency scores. Istanbul Medipol’s international exam table lists IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 84, PTE Academic 71, Cambridge C1 Advanced grade B, Linguaskill 160, Oxford Test of English 121 and YDS/YÖKDİL 70 — with no Duolingo entry.
- Public universities generally lean on YDS, YÖKDİL and their own exemption exams, and are the least likely to take DET.
A second Turkish quirk worth knowing: some universities require internationally recognised exams to be sat under supervision inside Turkey and reject online-delivered versions as a category. Where you see that policy, assume DET is out. Where DET is accepted, reported minimums commonly sit around 95–120 depending on the programme, mirroring the IELTS 5.5–6.5 band those universities ask for. Confirm the number with the international students office in writing, and keep the reply.
DET, hazirlik and your residence permit
Two things make English proof unusually valuable in Turkey.
Hazirlik. If you cannot prove English at the required level, an English-medium Turkish university will place you in a one-year preparatory school before your degree begins. That is a full extra year before your degree even starts. An accepted proficiency score — whether DET, IELTS, TOEFL or the university’s own exemption exam — skips it. This is why students here so often lose a year by not preparing properly once.
Residence permit (ikamet). Turkey’s student residence permit is built on your student certificate (öğrenci belgesi) from the university, along with insurance and address registration. There is no separate government English test requirement. So the English question is settled entirely by the university, not by immigration — which again means the university’s accepted-exams table is the only document that matters. For permit procedure itself, follow the Göç İdaresi (Presidency of Migration Management) rules and your university’s international office.
Choosing your target score for Turkey’s universities
In Turkey the target has an unusual shape, because the score is not only an admission requirement — it is an exemption threshold. Clear it and you start your degree; miss it and you sit hazirlik for a year.

Because the exemption line is a hard threshold, this is the country where aiming exactly at the published minimum is the most expensive mistake available. Add five points, and ask the international students office in writing whether the same number applies to admission and to the hazirlik exemption — at some universities they differ.

Why Arabic-language support matters for Arab students in Turkey
Arab students in Turkey are usually operating in three languages at once: Arabic at home, Turkish in the street and in paperwork, English in the lecture hall. A class run entirely in a third language adds load at exactly the wrong moment. Having the strategy explained in Arabic strips that away, and it targets the errors that actually cost you marks.
