Where Kenyan students apply — and what score each destination expects

Kenyan applications concentrate on five destinations, and the DET’s usefulness differs across them.

• United States. The dominant destination and the most DET-friendly: nearly all well-known US universities accept it for undergraduate entry, and most graduate programmes do too. Bachelor’s admissions often sit at 95–110; competitive undergraduate and graduate admissions want 120–130.
• Canada. Strong and growing among Kenyan applicants. The University of Toronto requires an overall 120 with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024 — the Production subscore is a separate hurdle, and a good overall score with weak Production still fails. Elsewhere, 110–125 is typical.
• United Kingdom. Imperial College London, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool and York are among the UK universities accepting the DET, usually 110–125 depending on the subject. See our UK DET score requirements guide.
• Ireland. The large majority of Irish universities accept the DET, and Ireland is an increasingly popular English-taught option inside the EU.
• Germany. English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes at many German universities and applied-sciences institutions accept the DET, commonly 105–120. German acceptance is set per programme, so read the specific course page.

Kenyan universities teach in English and do not usually require an English test from Kenyan applicants, so for most readers the DET is a document for going abroad rather than for staying. Where a programme page does not mention Duolingo at all, email the admissions office and keep the written reply — that single email has saved more Kenyan applicants a wasted exam than any checklist.

The visa layer: where the DET stops being enough

University acceptance and visa acceptance are separate decisions. Kenyan applicants get caught by this most often on the UK and Australian routes.

United Kingdom. The DET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study this is normally not a problem — gov.uk allows your Higher Education Provider to assess your English itself at CEFR B2 and confirm it on your CAS, and universities that accept the DET do exactly that. But for a course below degree level, the Home Office requires a SELT at B1 from an approved provider, and the DET will not qualify. Check your course level before choosing an exam.

Canada. The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, so every Kenyan applicant now uses the regular study permit. There is no fixed government English test on that route; the designated learning institution decides what evidence it accepts. If your DLI accepts the DET, submit the score alongside your letter of acceptance and the institution’s published English policy.

Australia. The DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa. An Australian offer made on a DET score still leaves the visa English requirement unmet, so budget for a test from the Department of Home Affairs’ list if Australia is your plan.

United States, Ireland, Germany. No extra government English test sits on top of admission. For the US, note that the F-1 interview at the embassy in Nairobi is conducted in English — real spoken fluency does double duty.

DET or IELTS for a student in Kenya

Once acceptance is settled, the choice comes down to format and to what each exam is valid for.

At degree level in the US, Canada, Ireland or Germany the DET is usually the more flexible option, and unlimited score sending matters more than students expect when you are applying to six or eight universities at once. Choosing your target score for the universities Kenyan students apply to

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too, which is where unprepared candidates are caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 95 fails a requirement that the headline number appears to meet.

Work backwards from the requirements on this page rather than aiming at a round number:

• 95–110 covers most US bachelor entry, and much of the English-taught bachelor and master intake in Germany (105–120).
• 110–125 is the usual band for UK degree-level entry (Imperial, Warwick, Southampton, Liverpool, York) and for most Canadian universities.
• 120–130 is what competitive undergraduate and graduate admissions ask for, and Toronto adds a subscore condition — 120 overall with 120 in Production, so a strong total with weak Production still fails.

Pick the highest requirement on your shortlist and plan a margin above it, because subscore floors rather than the overall number are what most often send an application back. You may sit up to three certified tests in any 30-day window, but a prepared first attempt beats a run of unprepared ones. Paying by card from Kenya

Teachero is paid in US dollars. M-Pesa is how most of Kenya pays for most things, but it is not an international card network, so you will need a Visa or Mastercard.

Kenyan bank cards generally handle international online payments well, and Kenya does not impose the kind of hard FX rationing seen elsewhere in the region. The practical checks are the ordinary ones: make sure international or online transactions are enabled on the card in your banking app, that the card is not a domestic-only variant, and that your daily online limit covers the charge. Banks increasingly ask you to confirm the transaction with an OTP, so keep the phone registered to the account nearby when you pay.

If your bank card is declined, the common alternatives are a card linked to a dollar account, a prepaid dollar card, or a virtual card from a licensed provider that supports international merchants. Several Kenyan mobile wallets can now issue a linked Visa card that works online abroad — that is the closest thing to paying by M-Pesa.
