For students in Baku, Ganja and Sumgayit, the Duolingo English Test has a rare advantage: it is accepted both in Baku and abroad. ADA University publishes DET minimums on its own admissions pages, and the same certificate opens doors in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Germany and Italy — one adaptive exam scored on the 10–160 scale, valid for two years and accepted by more than 6,000 institutions worldwide.
What the DET does not do is replace every other test. Turkey’s leading private universities do not list it, Hungary’s scholarship route wants a proctored B2 certificate, and Azerbaijan’s other universities mostly run their own placement exams. Knowing which is which before you book saves a semester.
Teachero is an online academy focused entirely on the DET. Classes are live and taught in English by certified instructors specialised in international English exams, with lesson recordings you can review afterwards.

Universities Azerbaijani students apply to with a DET score
Azerbaijani applicants split between Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Canada, Italy and Hungary. Here are the DET requirements we opened on the universities’ own pages — and the destinations where the DET is not listed.
United Kingdom and Ireland
- University of Sussex: 110 with at least 105 in each component for standard entry, 130 with at least 120 in each component for advanced entry.
- University of Southampton: 120 overall with subscore floors of 105 Listening, 110 Reading, 110 Writing and 110 Speaking for Band C courses, and 130 overall for Band G and above, with every subscore floor applied individually.
- Trinity College Dublin: 120 with 100 in every subscore for standard entry, 130 with 110 for higher entry.
- University College Dublin: from 90 with at least 80 in each subscore, with taught master’s options at 100 and 110 and above.
United States and Canada
- Arizona State University: 95 for most undergraduate majors, 100 for Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Fulton Engineering programmes, 120 for higher-requirement Cronkite journalism programmes.
- Northeastern University (College of Professional Studies): 105 for graduate and bachelor’s-completion programmes, 120 for doctoral study.
- University of Toronto: 120 overall with 120 in Production for undergraduate entry, for tests taken from 1 July 2024.
- University of British Columbia: 125 overall, with 115 Reading, 115 Listening, 120 Writing and 120 Speaking.
Germany and Italy
- Constructor University (Bremen): 110 for both undergraduate and graduate applicants.
- Bocconi University (Milan): 110 for its MSc and MA programmes; Bocconi’s undergraduate page does not list the Duolingo English Test.
Turkey and Hungary: where the DET is not listed
- The international-admissions pages of Koç University, Bilkent University and Sabancı University do not list the Duolingo English Test; they name TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or their own proficiency exams.
- The Stipendium Hungaricum application page does not name specific English tests and refers applicants to each call’s documents; the University of Debrecen‘s admission page asks for a standardised B2 certificate obtained at a proctored exam and does not list the Duolingo English Test.
Before you book a test for any of these, ask admissions in writing: do you accept the Duolingo English Test for this programme, and what overall and subscore minimums apply?
Is the DET used inside Azerbaijan?
Yes — at the university most Azerbaijani students would choose first. We opened the admissions pages of Baku’s international-facing universities:
- ADA University lists Duolingo 105 alongside IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 75 and PTE 50 for undergraduate applicants — Azerbaijani citizens via the State Examination Centre route, SAT-route applicants and international applicants alike — as the level that exempts you from its English for Academic and Professional Purposes programme. For graduate programmes, ADA lists 120 in the Duolingo English Test.
- French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ)‘s graduate page names IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL 80 and does not list the Duolingo English Test.
- Khazar University, Baku Higher Oil School and Baku Engineering University do not list the Duolingo English Test on the admissions pages we opened; they place new students through their own English tests.
A score of 120 or above covers ADA at both levels and most of the foreign requirements on this page for the next two years, which makes a single well-prepared attempt a sensible plan whether you stay in Baku or leave.
Before you book: the visa rules that decide your test
A DET score can win you an offer and still be the wrong document for the visa. Three routes matter to Azerbaijani applicants:
- United Kingdom — GOV.UK states that for degree-level study your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself at a level equivalent to CEFR B2, which is how DET-based offers turn into a CAS. The DET is not on the Home Office list of Secure English Language Tests, so below degree level you need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI.
- Canada — IRCC’s study-permit document list does not include a language test; your designated learning institution decides which English evidence it accepts.
- Australia — the Department of Home Affairs accepts a fixed list of tests and states that it does not accept English tests delivered completely online. The DET will not satisfy the subclass 500 requirement.
The United States has no government English test for the F-1 visa, so the university’s requirement is the only one that counts.
Choosing your target score for the universities Azerbaijani students apply to
The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too, which is where unprepared candidates are caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 100 fails Toronto’s requirement even though the headline number appears to meet it.
- 90–105 covers University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore, Arizona State at 95, ADA undergraduate entry and Northeastern’s professional-studies programmes at 105.
- 110–120 is where Constructor University and Bocconi’s master’s programmes (110), Sussex standard entry (110 with 105 each), ADA graduate entry (120) and Southampton’s Band C (120 with subscore floors) sit.
- 120–130+ is selective and graduate territory: Toronto at 120 with 120 in Production, UBC at 125 with subscore floors, Trinity at 120 with 100 in every subscore, Sussex advanced entry at 130 with 120 in each component.
Pick the highest requirement on your shortlist and plan a comfortable margin above it in every subscore. Send us your university’s English-requirements page on WhatsApp and we will read it with you, or start with the university finder and the score converter if you only know your IELTS band.
DET vs IELTS from Azerbaijan: the format comparison
IELTS remains the reference test in Baku, so most students compare the two before choosing.
| Duolingo English Test | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Computer-adaptive: questions get harder or easier as you answer | Fixed version, the same questions for everyone |
| Length | About 1 hour | Around 3 hours |
| Speaking | Recorded answers to on-screen prompts | Face-to-face interview with an examiner |
| Scoring | 10–160 overall plus four subscores | Bands 0–9 in each of the four skills |
| Acceptance | 6,000+ institutions, for admission | Very broad, including UKVI and Australian visa routes |
Use the DET everywhere your universities accept it — ADA, the US, the UK and Irish universities above, Constructor, Bocconi’s master’s programmes — and keep IELTS or TOEFL for Turkey, the Hungarian scholarship route, Australia and UK routes below degree level.
Studying online from Azerbaijan without losing the live experience
Azerbaijan sits at UTC+4, two hours ahead of Egypt, so live sessions land at a comfortable hour for most students. When one does not, the recording covers it.
Every Teachero course runs as live online classes taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with lesson recordings uploaded the same day. You submit the same homework, receive the same personal Speaking and Writing correction and sit the same full mock test before the exam as everyone else, with WhatsApp support between sessions.
- Standard course — more days, fewer hours per day.
- Intensive course — fewer days, more hours per day, when the test is close.
- Private 1-on-1 course — tailored around your weak question types.
Message us on WhatsApp for the current round, or see how the DET is used in other countries on our worldwide page.
Paying by card from Azerbaijan
Card payment by Visa or Mastercard issued by an Azerbaijani bank works. Two things are worth doing before you try:
- Confirm that online and foreign-merchant payments are enabled for the card in the bank’s app, and that the limit for such payments is not set to zero.
- Keep the phone that receives the confirmation code next to you. A first payment to a merchant abroad is sometimes held by the bank’s fraud check; confirming it in the app usually releases it within minutes.
If a card still will not go through, message us on WhatsApp and we will send the other options.
Frequently asked questions
Is the course taught in English?
Yes. Classes are taught fully in English by highly qualified, certified instructors who specialise in international English exams, which is also the language you are tested in. Arabic-language support exists for Arabic-speaking students; for students in Azerbaijan everything runs in English.
Does ADA University accept the DET?
Yes. ADA’s undergraduate admissions page lists Duolingo 105 alongside IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 75 and PTE 50 as the level that exempts you from its English for Academic and Professional Purposes programme, and its graduate page lists 120 in the Duolingo English Test.
Can I use the DET for Turkish universities?
The international-admissions pages of Koç, Bilkent and Sabancı do not list the Duolingo English Test; they name TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or their own exams. Ask any Turkish university in writing before you book.
Can I use the DET for a UK visa?
For degree-level courses, GOV.UK allows your university to assess your English itself at CEFR B2, which is how universities such as Sussex and Southampton accept the DET. Below degree level you need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI.
What if a live class falls at a difficult hour in Azerbaijan?
Every lesson is recorded and uploaded the same day, so you can follow the whole course from UTC+4 and still submit homework and receive your Speaking and Writing corrections.
What score should I aim for?
Work backwards from your programme. ADA undergraduate entry sits at 105 and graduate entry at 120, many US entry points around 95–110, UK and Canadian degree entry around 110–130, usually with a minimum in each subscore as well. Send us the English page of your university on WhatsApp and we will read it with you.
How do I pay for the course from Azerbaijan?
By Visa or Mastercard issued by an Azerbaijani bank, with online and foreign-merchant payments enabled in the app. Other options are available on WhatsApp.
How many times can I take the test?
Duolingo allows up to three certified tests in any 30-day period, and scores stay valid for two years. One prepared attempt beats several unprepared ones.
