Students in Bahrain usually need an English certificate for a university abroad — the UK first, then the US, Canada and Ireland — or for one of the British-affiliated institutions inside the Kingdom. The Duolingo English Test handles the first well: one adaptive online exam, scored on the 10–160 scale, valid for two years and accepted by more than 6,000 institutions worldwide.

Inside Bahrain the honest picture is that the universities we checked publish IELTS and TOEFL, or their own English test, and none of them names the DET. A Bahrain-based programme is therefore an “ask first”, while a UK or Irish programme with a published Duolingo band is a straightforward yes.

Teachero is an online academy focused entirely on the DET. Classes are live and taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with Arabic-language support available for Arabic speakers, and lesson recordings uploaded the same day. Below: what Bahraini universities publish, the scores at the universities Bahrain’s students apply to abroad, the sponsor and visa rules that decide your test, and card payment from a Bahraini bank.

Is the DET accepted by universities in Bahrain?

Not as a published standard, on the pages we could open:

  • RCSI Medical University of Bahrain asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in any band, or the TOEFL iBT, for undergraduate medicine, and notes that English qualifications are valid for two years from the test date. The DET is not mentioned.
  • Ahlia University lists TOEFL 500 or IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, or a pass in its internal English placement test. The DET is not mentioned.
  • British University of Bahrain asks for IELTS Academic 5.5 overall with 5.0 in each module for Year 1 entry, or its own BUB English Language Test, with TOEFL iBT referenced as an equivalent. The DET is not mentioned.
  • We could not open a requirements page for the University of Bahrain or Bahrain Polytechnic, so treat them the same way.

A useful pattern for British-affiliated institutions in Bahrain: the parent university in the UK may publish a Duolingo band, but the Bahrain campus sets its own list, and the pages above show that the list does not automatically include the DET. Email the campus you are applying to, ask whether the Duolingo English Test is accepted and at what score, and keep the reply.

Universities abroad that Bahrain’s students apply to with a DET score

This is where the DET does its real work for Bahraini applicants. Published requirements, each taken from the university’s own page:

United Kingdom

  • University of Hertfordshire: 105 with no less than 95 in each band for undergraduate, 120 with 95 in each band for postgraduate.
  • Heriot-Watt University: 100 with 95 in each component for foundation, 120 with 110 in each component for undergraduate and for STEM and design master’s, 120 with Writing at 115 for non-STEM master’s, 125 with 120 for PhD.

Ireland

  • Trinity College Dublin: 120 with 100 in every subscore for standard entry, 130 with 110 for higher entry.
  • University College Dublin: 90 with at least 80 in each subscore as the standard requirement, with taught master’s bands at 100, 110, 120 and above.

United States

  • Arizona State University: 95 for most undergraduate programmes, 100 for the BSc Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Fulton Engineering programmes and 120 for higher-requirement Cronkite journalism programmes.
  • Northeastern University (College of Professional Studies): 105 for bachelor’s-completion and graduate programmes, 120 for doctoral study.

Canada

  • University of Toronto: 120 overall with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024.

Nearby in the Gulf

  • Georgetown University in Qatar and Northwestern University in Qatar accept the DET alongside the TOEFL and IELTS without publishing a minimum; GUtech in Oman lists the DET at 105 or higher for direct admission.

Search more institutions in the university finder, then confirm the programme-level minimum in writing — the number differs between a bachelor’s and a master’s at the same university.

Scholarships, sponsors and the visa rules that decide your test

  • Your sponsor. If your degree abroad is funded through a government scholarship, an employer or a university sponsorship, the sponsor’s written rules decide which certificate goes in the file, and scholarship bodies in the region frequently specify IELTS or TOEFL. Read them before relying on the DET alone; the DET’s job is the university application itself.
  • United Kingdom. The DET is not a Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study, gov.uk states that your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself at CEFR B2 — that is how DET-based UK offers work. Below degree level you need a SELT from an approved provider at CEFR B1.
  • Canada. The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024; applications go through the regular study permit stream and your designated learning institution decides which English evidence it accepts.
  • Australia. Home Affairs accepts a fixed list — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, LanguageCert Academic, CELPIP and the Michigan English Test — and states that it does not accept tests delivered completely online. The DET will not satisfy the student visa requirement.

Because the UK is the first destination for Bahraini students, the degree-level rule above is the one that matters most: your university confirms your English on the CAS, and a published Duolingo band is what makes that possible.

Choosing your target score

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale and four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall, and many add a minimum in each subscore, which is where unprepared candidates get caught: Hertfordshire’s 105 with 95 in each band fails if Literacy comes in at 90, whatever the overall says.

  • 90–105 covers a large share of undergraduate entry: University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore, Arizona State at 95, Heriot-Watt foundation at 100 with 95, Hertfordshire at 105 with 95 in each band, GUtech at 105.
  • 120 with subscore floors is where selective and graduate entry sits: Toronto at 120 with 120 in Production, Heriot-Watt at 120 with 110 in each component, Hertfordshire postgraduate at 120, Trinity at 120 with 100 in every subscore.
  • 125–130+ is PhD and higher-entry territory: Heriot-Watt PhD at 125 with 120, Trinity higher entry at 130 with 110.

Take the highest requirement on your list and prepare for a comfortable margin above it. Read which Duolingo score do I need, convert an IELTS band with the score converter, or send us the programme page on WhatsApp.

DET vs IELTS for students in Bahrain

Duolingo English TestIELTS
FormatComputer-adaptive: questions get harder or easier as you answerFixed version, the same questions for everyone
SkillsIntegrated tasks that mix the four skillsFour separate sections
SpeakingRecorded answers to on-screen promptsFace-to-face interview with an examiner
Scoring10–160 overall plus four subscoresBands 0–9 in each skill
Acceptance6,000+ institutions, for admissionVery broad, including UKVI visa routes, Bahraini universities and most sponsors

The adaptive format rewards candidates who know each task type cold; what most Bahraini students need is not more vocabulary but the discipline of answering each task to its rubric. Use the DET where your universities accept it, and IELTS where the local institution, the sponsor or the visa route names it.

Studying online from Bahrain with live classes

Bahrain sits at UTC+3, an hour ahead of Cairo for most of the year, so live sessions fall at a workable time in Manama. Miss one and the recording is uploaded the same day.

Every Teachero course runs as live online classes taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with Arabic-language support for Arabic speakers.

All three include personal Speaking and Writing correction, a full mock test before the exam and WhatsApp support between sessions. Follow format changes on DET news.

Paying by card from Bahrain

Visa and Mastercard payments from Bahraini banks go through normally. Enable online and international transactions for the card with your bank first, and keep your phone nearby in case the bank asks you to approve a first international charge. If a card is declined, that is almost always the reason. Message us on WhatsApp if you need another way to pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do universities in Bahrain accept the Duolingo English Test?

Not on the pages we opened. RCSI Bahrain lists IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each band or TOEFL iBT; Ahlia University lists TOEFL 500 or IELTS 5.5 or its placement test; the British University of Bahrain lists IELTS 5.5 with 5.0 in each module or its own test. Email the admissions office of your programme and ask.

Can I use the DET for a Bahraini scholarship file?

Check the sponsor’s written rules. Scholarship bodies in the region often specify IELTS or TOEFL, even when the university itself accepts the DET for admission. Use the DET for the university application and read the sponsor’s requirements separately.

Is the course taught in English or Arabic?

In English, by certified instructors, which is also the language of the test. Arabic-language support is available for Arabic speakers whenever a point is easier to grasp in Arabic first.

What score do I need for universities in the UK and Ireland?

Published examples: Hertfordshire 105 with 95 in each band for undergraduate and 120 for postgraduate, Heriot-Watt 120 with 110 in each component, Trinity College Dublin 120 with 100 in every subscore, University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore.

Can I use my DET score for a UK student visa?

The DET is not a Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study, gov.uk says your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself at CEFR B2, which is how universities accept DET-based applicants. Below degree level you need a SELT from an approved provider.

Does Australia accept the DET for a student visa?

No. The Department of Home Affairs publishes a fixed list of accepted tests and the Duolingo English Test is not on it.

How do I pay from Bahrain?

By Visa or Mastercard online. Enable international and online transactions with your bank first and approve the charge if the bank asks. Other options are available on WhatsApp.
