Uzbekistan has one of the youngest and fastest-growing pools of study-abroad applicants anywhere, and the Duolingo English Test has become the practical English certificate for many of them: one adaptive exam scored on the 10–160 scale, valid for two years and accepted by more than 6,000 institutions worldwide.
It is also accepted closer to home than most students realise. Two international universities in Tashkent publish a DET score on their own admissions pages, while others still ask only for IELTS or CEFR certificates — the difference is on this page. So are the published numbers for the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and Germany, the visa rules that decide which test you sit, and what actually happens when you pay with a card issued in Uzbekistan.
Teachero is an online academy focused entirely on the DET. Classes are live and taught in English by certified instructors specialised in international English exams, with lesson recordings you can review afterwards.

Universities Uzbek students apply to with a DET score
Students from Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Fergana, Andijan and Namangan increasingly look beyond the regional routes to the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Ireland, with South Korea, Turkey and Malaysia as alternatives. Here are the DET requirements we opened on the universities’ own pages.
United States
- Arizona State University: 95 for most undergraduate majors, 100 for Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Fulton Engineering programmes and 120 for higher-requirement Cronkite journalism programmes.
- Northeastern University (College of Professional Studies): 105 for graduate and bachelor’s-completion programmes, 120 for doctoral study.
- Webster University (the US home campus of the Tashkent branch): 110 for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants.
United Kingdom and Ireland
- University of Sussex: 110 with at least 105 in each component for standard entry, 130 with at least 120 in each component for advanced entry.
- University of Southampton: 120 overall with subscore floors of 105 Listening, 110 Reading, 110 Writing and 110 Speaking for Band C courses, and 130 overall for Band G and above. Scores must be met in each individual subscore.
- Trinity College Dublin: 120 with 100 in every subscore for standard entry, 130 with 110 for higher entry.
- University College Dublin: from 90 with at least 80 in each subscore, with taught master’s options at 100 and 110 and above.
Canada and Germany
- University of Toronto: 120 overall with 120 in Production for undergraduate entry, for tests taken from 1 July 2024.
- University of British Columbia: 125 overall, with 115 Reading, 115 Listening, 120 Writing and 120 Speaking.
- Constructor University (Bremen): 110 for both undergraduate and graduate applicants — one of the few German institutions publishing a DET band.
Turkey and Malaysia: check before you assume
Turkey is popular with Uzbek families, but the international-admissions pages of Koç University, Bilkent University and Sabancı University do not list the Duolingo English Test; they name TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or their own proficiency exams. In Malaysia, Education Malaysia Global Services does not include the DET in the English certificates for the student pass. For either country, get the university’s answer in writing before you book.
Is the DET used inside Uzbekistan?
Yes, and more than in most neighbouring countries. We opened the admissions pages of Tashkent’s international universities:
- Webster University in Tashkent lists a minimum Duolingo score of 120 for bachelor’s programmes, or 100 for admission conditional on completing its ESL Bridge programme, and 120 for master’s programmes.
- Kimyo International University in Tashkent (KIUT) lists Duolingo 85 among its accepted language certificates, alongside IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 58 and CEFR B1.
- Management Development Institute of Singapore in Tashkent (MDIST) mentions Duolingo, but only to say that holders of a Duolingo certificate must sit the MDIST placement test; it publishes no DET score.
- Westminster International University in Tashkent, Central Asian University, Amity University Tashkent and New Uzbekistan University do not list the Duolingo English Test on the pages we opened; they name IELTS, TOEFL iBT or CEFR certificates.
If your plan is Tashkent first and abroad later, a DET score of 120 or above covers Webster Tashkent today and most of the foreign requirements on this page for the next two years.
Before you book: the visa rules that decide your test
A DET score can win you an offer and still be the wrong document for the visa. Three routes matter to Uzbek applicants:
- United Kingdom — GOV.UK states that for degree-level study your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, at a level equivalent to CEFR B2, which is how DET-based offers turn into a CAS. The DET is not on the Home Office list of Secure English Language Tests, so below degree level you need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI.
- Canada — IRCC’s study-permit document list does not include a language test; your designated learning institution decides which English evidence it accepts.
- Australia — the Department of Home Affairs accepts a fixed list of tests and states that it does not accept English tests delivered completely online. The DET will not satisfy the subclass 500 requirement.
The United States has no government English test for the F-1 visa; the university’s requirement is the only one that counts, which is why the DET works so well for US-bound Uzbek students.
Choosing your target score for the universities Uzbek students apply to
The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale in steps of five, plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall score, and many publish a minimum in each subscore too. That second line is where candidates from a grammar-heavy school system get caught: an overall 120 with a Production of 100 fails Toronto’s requirement even though the headline number appears to meet it.
- 85–105 covers KIUT in Tashkent at 85, Arizona State at 95, Webster Tashkent’s conditional route at 100, Northeastern’s professional-studies programmes at 105 and University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore.
- 110–120 is where Webster’s US campus and Constructor University (110), Sussex standard entry (110 with 105 each), Webster Tashkent (120) and Southampton’s Band C (120 with subscore floors) sit.
- 120–130+ is selective and graduate territory: Toronto at 120 with 120 in Production, UBC at 125 with subscore floors, Trinity at 120 with 100 in every subscore, Sussex advanced entry at 130 with 120 in each component.
Pick the highest requirement on your shortlist and plan a comfortable margin above it in every subscore. Send us your university’s English-requirements page on WhatsApp and we will read it with you, or start with the university finder and the score converter if you only know your IELTS or CEFR level.
DET vs IELTS from Uzbekistan: the format comparison
IELTS is deeply familiar in Uzbekistan, so most students compare the two before choosing.
| Duolingo English Test | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Computer-adaptive: questions get harder or easier as you answer | Fixed version, the same questions for everyone |
| Length | About 1 hour | Around 3 hours |
| Speaking | Recorded answers to on-screen prompts | Face-to-face interview with an examiner |
| Scoring | 10–160 overall plus four subscores | Bands 0–9 in each of the four skills |
| Acceptance | 6,000+ institutions, for admission | Very broad, including UKVI and Australian visa routes |
Use the DET everywhere your universities accept it — the US, Webster Tashkent, the UK and Irish universities above — and keep IELTS for Australia, for UK routes below degree level, and for Tashkent universities that list only IELTS or CEFR.
Studying online from Uzbekistan without losing the live experience
Uzbekistan sits at UTC+5, three hours ahead of Egypt, which is close enough that most live sessions land in your afternoon or evening. When one does not, the recording covers it.
Every Teachero course runs as live online classes taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with lesson recordings uploaded the same day. You submit the same homework, receive the same personal Speaking and Writing correction and sit the same full mock test before the exam as everyone else, and WhatsApp support is there between sessions.
- Standard course — more days, fewer hours per day.
- Intensive course — fewer days, more hours per day, when the test is close.
- Private 1-on-1 course — tailored around your weak question types.
Message us on WhatsApp for the current round, or see how the DET is used in other countries on our worldwide page.
Paying by card from Uzbekistan
Card payment works from Uzbekistan, with one detail that decides everything: the card scheme.
- Use a Visa or Mastercard issued by an Uzbek bank. The domestic Humo and Uzcard schemes are built for payments inside Uzbekistan and are not accepted by merchants abroad. Most banks issue an international Visa or Mastercard alongside them, often in a foreign-currency account.
- Check that international and online use is enabled in the bank’s app before you pay, and keep the phone that receives the confirmation code next to you. A first payment to a foreign merchant is sometimes held by the bank’s fraud check; a quick confirmation in the app usually releases it.
If a card still will not go through, message us on WhatsApp and we will send the other options.
Frequently asked questions
Is the course taught in English?
Yes. Classes are taught fully in English by highly qualified, certified instructors who specialise in international English exams, which is also the language you are tested in. Arabic-language support exists for Arabic-speaking students; for students in Uzbekistan everything runs in English.
Which universities in Tashkent accept the DET?
Webster University in Tashkent publishes a minimum of 120 for bachelor’s and master’s programmes, with a conditional route at 100 through its ESL Bridge programme, and Kimyo International University in Tashkent lists Duolingo 85. WIUT, Central Asian University, Amity Tashkent and New Uzbekistan University do not list the Duolingo English Test on the pages we opened.
Can I use the DET for the US?
The US has no government English test for the student visa, so the university’s requirement is the only one that matters. Arizona State publishes 95 for most majors, Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies 105 for graduate entry and Webster University 110.
Can I use the DET for a UK visa?
For degree-level courses, GOV.UK allows your university to assess your English itself at CEFR B2, which is how universities such as Sussex and Southampton accept the DET. Below degree level you need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI.
What if a live class falls at a difficult hour in Uzbekistan?
Every lesson is recorded and uploaded the same day, so you can follow the whole course from UTC+5 and still submit homework and receive your Speaking and Writing corrections.
What score should I aim for?
Work backwards from your programme. KIUT takes 85, many US entry points sit around 95–110, Webster Tashkent and most UK and Canadian degree entry around 110–130, usually with a minimum in each subscore as well. Send us the English page of your university on WhatsApp and we will read it with you.
How do I pay for the course from Uzbekistan?
With a Visa or Mastercard issued by an Uzbek bank, with international and online use switched on. Humo and Uzcard cards are domestic and will not work. Other options are available on WhatsApp.
How many times can I take the test?
Duolingo allows up to three certified tests in any 30-day period, and scores stay valid for two years. One prepared attempt beats several unprepared ones.
Message us on WhatsApp — tell us your target university, whether it is in Tashkent or abroad, and your deadline, and we will recommend Standard, Intensive or Private 1-on-1.
