Where Peruvian students apply — and the scores those universities publish
The DET is accepted at more than 6,000 institutions, and it is strongest in the destinations Peruvian students choose: the United States, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. Examples you can check yourself:
- Arizona State University (USA) — 95 for general undergraduate programmes, 100 for Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Engineering, 120 for the Cronkite school.
- University of Toronto (Canada) — 120 overall with 120 in Production.
- IE University (Spain) — minimum 130; Spain is a common choice for Peruvian postgraduates because the rest of the programme may be in Spanish.
- Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) — 120 with 100 in each subscore, or 130 with 110 for higher-band courses.

Acceptance belongs to the programme, not the country. Before you commit to a test, email admissions and ask in one line whether they accept the Duolingo English Test and what overall and subscore minimum they require.
Scholarships and local use
Peruvian universities teach in Spanish and do not normally ask for a DET at admission. Where it matters is the international office — intercambio and double-degree places — and postgraduate applications abroad.
If you are aiming at a funded route such as Pronabec’s Beca Generación del Bicentenario, which supports postgraduate study at highly ranked universities abroad, read the current convocatoria carefully: the English evidence that counts is the one the funder and the receiving university name, and some still specify TOEFL or IELTS. Confirm first, then let the admission requirement decide which exam you prepare for. If it is the DET, we prepare you for exactly that.

The overall score is only half the condition. Subscore minimums — Toronto’s 120 in Production, Trinity’s 100 in each — are where offers are lost. We set the target from your own programme’s page and add a sensible margin, because scores move in 5-point steps and test-day performance varies.
What the test actually asks you to do
One adaptive exam of about an hour mixes roughly fifteen question types, and the engine keeps raising the difficulty while you keep answering well. Knowing what each task rewards is most of the preparation:
- Read and Complete and Read and Select — precise grammar, spelling and vocabulary work that builds Literacy; these are method tasks, not guessing games.
- Listen and Type and Read Aloud — short, high-frequency items that move Comprehension and Conversation faster than anything else on the exam.
- Interactive Reading and Interactive Writing — longer sets where pacing decides the outcome: run out of time on the last screen and the whole set suffers.
- Speak About the Photo, Listen Then Speak and Read Then Speak — spoken tasks graded on how long you keep going, how clearly you structure the answer and how varied your language is. Stopping after twenty seconds is the most common self-inflicted loss.
- Writing Sample and Speaking Sample — the longer pieces that shape your Production subscore and are also sent to the institutions you choose.

DET, IELTS or TOEFL from Peru?
Once acceptance is settled, the three exams differ mainly in shape.

Keep IELTS or TOEFL in view for an Australian student visa, a UK visa route that needs a SELT, a funder that names those exams, or a university that does not list Duolingo. For everything else the DET is the more flexible route, and a second attempt can follow within days rather than waiting for the next sitting.
Visa points to check first
- Australia: the DET is not accepted for the subclass 500 student visa, even where the university accepts it academically.
- Canada: the SDS stream ended in November 2024; on the regular study permit, your designated learning institution decides what English evidence it accepts.
- United Kingdom: the DET is not a UKVI SELT. Degree-level admission at a university with a track record of compliance normally runs on the university’s own assessment; below-degree and some pre-sessional routes need a SELT.
- United States and Spain: no English test on the visa itself — the university’s requirement is what you must meet.

Paying by card from Peru
The course is paid by card (Visa or Mastercard) from Peru, and other options are available on WhatsApp. Peruvian banks usually keep international online purchases switched off by default, so open your banking app, enable “compras por internet” and international use, and check the limit before you try.

Can I prepare and apply from outside Lima?
Yes. Our classes are fully online, and the DET is accepted by the same institutions wherever in Peru you apply from, so Arequipa, Trujillo, Cusco or Piura makes no difference to your preparation or your application.
DET, IELTS or TOEFL for my application from Peru?
Where your universities publish a Duolingo band, the DET is usually the simpler exam to prepare for: one adaptive hour, an overall 10–160 score, four subscores and unlimited score sending. IELTS or TOEFL is still needed for a UK SELT route, an Australian student visa, a funder that names them, and universities that do not list Duolingo.
Which universities accept it?
