Students in Kuwait need an English certificate for one of two reasons: a university application abroad — usually the UK, the US, Canada or Ireland — or a scholarship or sponsorship file. The Duolingo English Test solves the first cleanly: one adaptive online exam, scored on the 10–160 scale, valid for two years and accepted by more than 6,000 institutions worldwide. The second depends on who is paying, and this page is honest about that.

Inside Kuwait the picture is different. The private universities publish TOEFL, IELTS and in-house placement tests, and none of the admissions pages we opened mentions the DET, so a Kuwait-based programme should be treated as “ask first”.

Teachero is an online academy focused entirely on the DET. Classes are live and taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with Arabic-language support available for Arabic speakers, and lesson recordings uploaded the same day. Below: what Kuwaiti universities publish, the scores at the universities Kuwait’s students apply to abroad, the visa and sponsor rules that decide your test, and card payment from a Kuwaiti bank.

Is the DET accepted by universities in Kuwait?

Not as a published standard, on the pages we could open:

  • Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) asks for official iBT TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores — IELTS at 4.5 or above — or its own Accuplacer English test. The Duolingo English Test is not mentioned.
  • American University of Kuwait (AUK) states on its admissions page that first-time students must meet its English proficiency requirements, without naming the DET among them.
  • We could not open the requirements pages of the other private universities, such as the American University of the Middle East, so treat them the same way: ask before you book.

So if your target is inside Kuwait, email admissions and ask whether the Duolingo English Test is accepted and at what score, and keep the reply. If your target is abroad, the DET is one of the most useful documents you can hold.

Universities abroad that Kuwait’s students apply to with a DET score

Kuwaiti applicants use the DET for the UK, the United States, Canada and Ireland. Published requirements, each taken from the university’s own page:

United Kingdom

  • University of Hertfordshire: 105 with no less than 95 in each band for undergraduate, 120 with 95 in each band for postgraduate.
  • Heriot-Watt University: 100 with 95 in each component for foundation, 120 with 110 in each component for undergraduate and for STEM and design master’s, 120 with Writing at 115 for non-STEM master’s, 125 with 120 for PhD.

United States

  • Arizona State University: 95 for most undergraduate programmes, 100 for the BSc Nursing, 105 for higher-requirement Fulton Engineering programmes and 120 for higher-requirement Cronkite journalism programmes.
  • Northeastern University (College of Professional Studies): 105 for bachelor’s-completion and graduate programmes, 120 for doctoral study.

Canada

  • University of Toronto: 120 overall with 120 in Production for tests taken on or after 1 July 2024.

Ireland

  • Trinity College Dublin: 120 with 100 in every subscore for standard entry, 130 with 110 for higher entry.
  • University College Dublin: 90 with at least 80 in each subscore as the standard requirement, with taught master’s bands at 100, 110, 120 and above.

Search more institutions in the university finder, then confirm the programme-level minimum with admissions in writing — the number differs between a bachelor’s and a master’s at the same university, and between faculties.

Scholarships, the cultural office and the visa rules that decide your test

  • Your sponsor. Many Kuwaiti students study abroad on a government scholarship or an employer’s sponsorship, and the sponsor’s written rules decide which certificate goes in the file. Scholarship bodies in the region frequently specify IELTS or TOEFL. Read the requirements before relying on the DET alone; use the DET where it is accepted, which is the university application itself.
  • United Kingdom. The DET is not a Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study, gov.uk states that your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself at CEFR B2 — that is how DET-based UK offers work. Below degree level you need a SELT from an approved provider at CEFR B1.
  • Canada. The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024; applications go through the regular study permit stream and your designated learning institution decides which English evidence it accepts.
  • Australia. Home Affairs accepts a fixed list — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, LanguageCert Academic, CELPIP and the Michigan English Test — and states that it does not accept tests delivered completely online. The DET will not satisfy the student visa requirement.

If your file involves a sponsor that names IELTS, or Australia, plan for two tests before you pay for either.

Choosing your target score

The DET reports an overall score on the 10–160 scale and four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. Universities publish a minimum overall, and many add a minimum in each subscore, which is where unprepared candidates get caught: an overall 120 with Production at 105 does not meet Toronto’s requirement even though the headline number does.

  • 90–105 covers a large share of undergraduate entry: University College Dublin from 90 with 80 in each subscore, Arizona State at 95, Heriot-Watt foundation at 100 with 95, Hertfordshire at 105 with 95 in each band, Northeastern’s professional-studies programmes at 105.
  • 120 with subscore floors is where selective and graduate entry sits: Toronto at 120 with 120 in Production, Heriot-Watt at 120 with 110 in each component, Hertfordshire postgraduate at 120, Trinity at 120 with 100 in every subscore.
  • 125–130+ is PhD and higher-entry territory: Heriot-Watt PhD at 125 with 120, Trinity higher entry at 130 with 110.

Take the highest requirement on your list and prepare for a comfortable margin above it. Read which Duolingo score do I need, convert an IELTS band with the score converter, or send us the programme page on WhatsApp.

Studying online from Kuwait with live classes

Kuwait sits at UTC+3, an hour ahead of Cairo for most of the year, so live sessions fall at a workable time. Miss one and the recording is uploaded the same day.

Every Teachero course runs as live online classes taught in English by highly qualified, certified instructors, with Arabic-language support for Arabic speakers.

All three include personal Speaking and Writing correction, a full mock test before the exam and WhatsApp support between sessions. Follow format changes on DET news.

Paying by card from Kuwait

Visa and Mastercard payments from Kuwaiti banks go through normally. Enable online and international transactions for the card with your bank first, and keep your phone nearby in case the bank asks you to approve a first international charge. If a card is declined, that is almost always the reason. Message us on WhatsApp if you need another way to pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do universities in Kuwait accept the Duolingo English Test?

Not on the admissions pages we opened. GUST lists IELTS Academic, TOEFL and its Accuplacer test; AUK’s admissions page requires English proficiency without naming the DET. Email the admissions office of the programme you want and ask whether the DET is accepted and at what score.

Can I use the DET for a Kuwaiti scholarship file?

Check the sponsor’s written rules. Scholarship bodies in the region often specify IELTS or TOEFL, even when the university itself accepts the DET for admission. Use the DET for the university application and read the sponsor’s requirements separately.

Is the course taught in English or Arabic?

In English, by certified instructors, which is also the language of the test. Arabic-language support is available for Arabic speakers whenever a point is easier to grasp in Arabic first.

What score do I need for universities in the UK and Canada?

Published examples: Hertfordshire 105 with 95 in each band for undergraduate and 120 for postgraduate, Heriot-Watt 120 with 110 in each component, Toronto 120 with 120 in Production, Trinity College Dublin 120 with 100 in every subscore.

Can I use my DET score for a UK student visa?

The DET is not a Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study, gov.uk says your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself at CEFR B2, which is how universities accept DET-based applicants. Below degree level you need a SELT from an approved provider.

Does Australia accept the DET for a student visa?

No. The Department of Home Affairs publishes a fixed list of accepted tests and the Duolingo English Test is not on it.

How do I pay from Kuwait?

By Visa or Mastercard online. Enable international and online transactions with your bank first and approve the charge if the bank asks. Other options are available on WhatsApp.
